When Kasia began her job search, she was struggling to find a job that would match her skillset and provide the calm, positive working environment she was looking for.
So, when her Employment Consultant walked from the WISE Employment office across the road to Assured Care Services with Kasia’s resume in hand, no one expected that he would find the perfect role that Kasia had been looking for.
She interviewed for the role of Administration Assistant, and was offered the job just days later. Four months on, and Kasia says she’s happy to stay in the role until she retires!
With qualifications in business and IT, Kasia wanted a role that matched her skills. She also needed a calm and structured workplace where, as someone on the autism spectrum, she could feel comfortable, supported, and able to do her best work.
“I really wanted a role in administration because I have Certificates in Business and IT. I really like doing data entry, filing and ordering. I’m good at getting things organised,” Kasia says.
“I’m really enjoying the role. Everyone is very friendly, polite and calm, and if I need help with anything I just ask.”
Assured Care Services is a support and care provider for NDIS participants in South Australia. As an organisation that embraces diversity and inclusivity, they were onboard with finding a role for a person with disability.
“We had been talking as an organisation that embraces disability about supporting someone while they’re learning. It’s been a positive experience. Kasia is exceptionally keen to learn. Anyone can show her a task once and she just gets it,” says Kasia’s hiring manager.
Just like any new role, Kasia’s role at Assured Care Services hasn’t been without its challenges. Her solution to overcoming them?
“Time management,” she says.
“Whenever someone needs something, I always check what the deadline is, how soon they need it. Then that’s how I organise my day, and what tasks I need to do.”
Kasia says a key part of her role is being very organised, which is something that she excels at.
“I do all of the ordering for the office… all of the stationery and snacks for the kitchen. I fill up all of the sugar and the tea bags. I also do lots of filing, scanning, and data entry.”
WISE In-Work Support consultant Daniel has been visiting Kasia on site.
“Kasia was super diligent and often applied for 20 jobs a week.
“You could tell that she was starting to get a bit disheartened after applying for jobs and not hearing back… now Kasia is so happy that she is pretty much glowing.”
Kasia continues her volunteer work with Can:Do 4 Kids, which she has been doing since 2010, however she said that a paid role gives her the extra freedom of being able to save money, and learn new skills.
Kasia says she is grateful for the support from Daniel and WISE, and loves that she can ask for as much assistance as she needs.
“He is a very good guy, and he can be funny too! He always asks me how I’m going and if I need help. I can get as much or as little support as I need… when I started here, I had the choice to bring a WISE team member to my interview, and I had the opportunity to bring support with me to work when I first started too.
“Even though I’m working independently now, WISE is still there to help me if I need it.”
