Returning to the workforce after an extended absence can be a daunting experience. For many job seekers, the hardest part of finding work isn’t the job itself, but managing the application process alongside a lack of confidence.
When 39-year-old Becca moved to Shepparton, she had been out of the workforce for eight years due to serious health issues.
“Even though I finally felt physically and mentally ready to work again, a really negative experience with a previous employment provider had left me with severe anxiety. It all felt so overwhelming that I missed my first two appointments with WISE,” Becca said.
Fortunately, a welcoming environment and a supportive Job Coach helped change her entire outlook, helping Becca find her confidence, overcome her fears, and return to work on her own terms.
Taking the first step
Making that initial contact is often the biggest hurdle. When Becca called the WISE Shepparton office after missing her first two appointments, she was anxious and apologised profusely, worried she would be reprimanded.
Instead, she was met with immediate understanding. Her newly assigned Job Coach, Jes, reassured her.
“She just told me ‘mate, it’s okay! This is a huge step you have taken to work. Just come on down in a few days and we can have a talk’,” Becca recalls Jes telling her.
When Becca walked into the office a few days later, she introduced herself using humour, announcing that the “no show-er” had finally arrived. Jes matched her energy perfectly, laughing along and instantly making Becca feel at ease.
Becca said that Jes’ understanding of her situation made her feel like WISE was a safe space for her – where she could build a rapport with Jes without any pressure to find a job immediately.
Focusing on the right fit
As Becca and Jes continued to meet, their conversations deepened. They bonded over shared interests, including a mutual love for Adam Sandler movies, which brought plenty of laughter to their sessions.
The turning point in Becca’s journey came when Jes asked a simple but profound question: “What do you want to do?”
“I mentioned I would like to try housekeeping … within days Jes phoned me and told me I had an interview,” Becca said.
“Then, I got the job!”
Months later, Becca is still thriving in her role. She loves the work and deeply values the sense of achievement that comes with maintaining steady employment.
Ongoing support and a brighter future
The support from WISE did not stop once Becca signed her employment contract. Becca and Jes still catch up regularly with phone calls, even going for a walk as part of their post-placement support appointments.
This approach not only supports Becca’s physical fitness but provides a relaxed, low-pressure environment to set goals and explore how WISE can continue to support her future aspirations.
“I truly hope that anyone that reads this who is feeling hesitant to reach out doesn’t let that hold them back… you will find your Jes! Every time I get a message for an appointment now, I’m excited. I no longer carry that anxiety.”
