For more than 20 years, Anton McMurray has captivated audiences with his incredible wood sculptures, creating artworks for exhibitions, schools, local governments, and private collectors. But in 2019, everything came to a halt when chronic back pain made it impossible for him to continue working. “For months at a time, I couldn’t sleep, stand, or sit without experiencing shooting pain in my back and left leg,” Anton recalls. “I tried acupuncture, physiotherapy, chiropractic treatment, osteopathy, Pilates, swimming, heat packs, and every painkiller doctors prescribed, but nothing worked.” Scans revealed extensive damage to the discs in his lower back that only surgery could fix. He was placed on a waiting list, but due to the pandemic, it wasn’t until February 2024 that he was finally able to undergo the procedure he needed.
Finding a path forward with WISE Employment
Throughout his struggles, Anton was introduced to WISE Employment and case manager Laurianne Florigny, who he describes as a “lifeline” in his journey back to sculpting. “When Laurianne and I first met, we discussed how I could safely return to work after surgery. My biggest challenges were the heavy lifting involved in moving logs and using my chainsaws.” Laurianne identified a way forward by recommending lighter carving equipment and a machine to handle the logs. She introduced Anton to JobAccess and guided him through the application process to secure the necessary support. Thanks to Laurianne’s persistence, JobAccess approved the purchase of specialised chainsaws and a log loader, making it possible for Anton to return to work safely.
Breaking barriers with JobAccess
JobAccess is an Australian Government initiative that provides workplace solutions for people with disabilities, their employers, and service providers. Through funding and resources, it helps remove barriers to employment by offering workplace modifications, advice on rights and responsibilities, and assistance in navigating complex systems. “Laurianne’s follow-up conversations and advocacy made all the difference,” Anton says. “She has been a solid support through countless treatments, surgery, and an ongoing recovery.” Laurianne reflects on his journey, saying, “Challenges are not roadblocks, but invitations to discover new strengths within us. The true power lies in finding creative ways to rise above, succeed, grow, and keep moving forward. “In Anton’s case, he just needed one person who understood the system and believed in his ability, not his limitations. That belief allowed him to continue his work.”
Returning to his craft
Now back in action, Anton has completed several major artworks, including the Storm Leaf sculptures for the Yarra Ranges Council Ridge Walk and a collaboration with Simone Thomson for the Big Sculpture exhibition walk in St Kilda. “It’s an incredible feeling to create again,” Anton says. “I went from fearing my sculpting days were over to feeling excited about re-engaging with my work. I’m hugely grateful for the support and belief that WISE Employment and JobAccess have given me.” For Anton, this isn’t just about returning to work. It’s about reclaiming his career as a sculptor.
